Nokia will buy the Norwegian software firm Trolltech to strengthen its web to mobile activities.
Trolltech’s cross-platform Qtopia software enables companies to build and deploy software across a wide range of operating systems and electronic devices. It is used in apps such as Skype, Google Earth, Adobe Photoshop Elements and Lucasfilm and by more than 5,000 customers worldwide. Qtopia has shipped in more than 10 million devices including mobiles set-top boxes and media players.
Nokia will pay around $153m for Trollech. It says the purchase will ‘accelerate its cross-platform software strategy for mobile devices and desktop applications, and develop its Internet services business’.
Kai Oistamo, exec VP of devices at Nokia, said: "Trolltech's deep understanding of open source software and its strong technology assets will enable both Nokia and others to innovate on our device platforms while reducing time-to-market. This acquisition will also further increase the competitiveness of S60 and Series 40."
