Kyocera is to buy the mobile phone business of Sanyo for up to $468 million.
It the deal concludes, it will make Kyocera the world's sixth-largest mobile vendor. The combined market share of 1.5 percent would put them behind Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, and LG. Kyocera was the world's ninth largest in 3Q 2007, according to Gartner.
Neither company has much of a presence in Europe, although Sanyo has released some 3G handsets in the region. However, Sanyo does work closely with Sprint Nextel in the US.
