Sony Ericsson wants to be the third largest handset company in the world by 2011.

The gauntlet was laid down yesterday by Sony Ericsson's new president Dick Komiyama after buoyant 4Q 2007 results driven by its Walkman and Cyber-shot range of handsets.

SE's global market share currently stands at 8.8 per cent according to Gartner, compared to market-leader Nokia at 38.1 per cent, Samsung on 14.5 per cent and Moto on 13.1 per cent.

Komiyama told the FT that the company would also be seeking to increase its US market share in 2008, which was at just 2.2 per cent in September.

Sony Ericsson is expected to use the Mobile World Congress tradeshow next month to unveil more details of its PlayNow mobile content offering.
