Gartner says 2.3 trillion text messages will be sent across major markets worldwide in 2008.

The staggering figure represents a 19.6 per cent increase on the 2007 total of 1.9 trillion. Meanwhile the value of this traffic will be $60.2 billion, up from $52 billion in 2007.

Asia/Pacific and Japan remain the biggest consumers of mobile messaging, with Gartner estimating that these consumers sent 1.5 trillion messages in 2007, and will send 1.7 trillion in 2008.

Interestingly, it suggest volumes of photo messaging will stall in the next few years as users increasingly share photos through mobile communities and social networks rather than peer to peer.
