Nintendo handheld accounts for over 50 per cent of all the region’s games hardware sales.
It's handheld rather than 'mobile' entertainment, but IGN reports that according to data from Media Create Nintendo’s DS console has now sold over 20 million units in Japan.
The device has made its name with 'casual' games like Brain Training and is aimed squarely at the same demographic that many mobile games publishers have in their sights - i.e. adults and, more significantly, women.
The original DS incarnation succeeded in shifting six million units in the first 14 months on the market, but since the arrival of the redesigned DS Lite on February 2006 it has gone on to sell a further 14 million units.
Since hitting Japanese retail the twin-screened machine has accounted for over 50 per cent of the region’s hardware sales. In addition, 84 million software units have been sold – itself accounting to 40 per cent of the entire software market, 10 per cent of which is made up of Brain Training sales alone.
