Sharp has shipped 5m handsets supporting the Japanese mobile TV standard, One-Seg.
Since releasing its first One-Seg mobile, the SoftBank 905SH with a ‘cycloid-style’ LCD screen, in May 2006, Sharp has now released eight models. The devices support broadcast digital TV functions, information on the current TV programmr, EPG (electronic programme guide), and TV recording.
One-Seg was launched in Japan in April 2006 and is based on the Japanese digital TV standard ISDB-T. Japan's operators are expected to ship a combined 20 million One-Seg broadcast TV phones in fiscal 2007.
