The GSMA says the mobile industry will invest $50 billion in sub-Saharan Africa in five years.
The funds will provide more than 90 per cent of the population with mobile coverage. Sub-Saharan countries are among the world’s fastest growing mobile territories and have demonstrated a genuine enthusiasm for content services, with Nigeria, for example, acquiring UK Premiership football rights for mobile video.
The GSMA estimates that the mobile industry has invested $35 billion so far in the region, providing more than 500 million people (67 per cent of the population) with mobile coverage.
There are more than 150 million mobile subscribers in sub-Saharan Africa today. However, a further 350 million people have mobile coverage and are not yet directly connected.
