AT&T to offer Napster downloads

AT&T will launch into the mobile music space via a subscription service with Napster.
The deal marks a full scale entry into mobile music for the operator, which has lagged its main rivals Sprint and Verizon in the sector. Starting mid-November, AT&T customers can browse Napster’s five million songs, preview samples of each song and purchase and download music.
Subscriptions cost $7.49 a month for five songs; this is not the kind of all-you-cat-eat service that Napster offers in the web. So far, that’s only been replicated on mobile by NTT DoCoMo.
AT&T simultaneously announced two new music applications: MobiVJ, a $6.99 a month streaming video service, and VIP Access, a $2.99 a month ‘mobile fan club and discovery service.
Of course, AT&T is the exclusive supplier of the iPhone in the US, which connects to iTunes only via a USB cable and not over the air. It’s safe to assume the iPhone will not perform over the air downloads from Napster.
