Apple has sold one million iPhones in 74 days on sale.
The announcement comes less than a week after Apple launched the second phase of its roll-out by cutting the price of the 8GB device by $200, from $599 to $399, and the 4GB iPhone by $200 after current supplies are exhausted.
The sales milestone is slightly ahead of target, although Apple has faced some criticism about the momentum of its sales. It set itself a target of 10 million by the start of 2008.
It’s been a customarily business news day for Apple and iPhone after several resellers began stocking the PhoneSIMFree software product that unlocks the device, enabling consumers others than those signed up to AT&T to put their SIMs in the device.
There’s now speculation that Apple will update iPhone with a new locking system.
Also, BusinessWeek reported that Apple is considering a bid in the US auction of 700 MHz band radio space in January. This is the spectrum that Google has also been linked with. The blogosphere suggests that this would make Apple a prospective network provider, but this would seem unlikely given Apple’s current attempts to court the existing cellular operators.
