South Africa's largest operator deploys ROK-powered 'MobileTVPlaya'.
The 2.5G streaming service will offer Vodacom's 24 million customers a choice of ten channels including national and international live news, sports updates, music videos, cartoons and comedies for SAR29.00 a month (approximately £3).
ROK has also launched mobile TV services with Avea in Turkey, AIS in Thailand, Telenor in Pakistan and Celcom in Malaysia. The app is also embedded on Nokia E65 and E61i handsets.
MobileTVPlaya will complement the 22 channel 3G TV line-up Vodacom launched on its Vodafone live! portal in December 2005.
Separately, Vodacom South Africa is trailing a 17 channel DVB-H service in partnership with MultiChoice.
Romeo Kumalo, executive director at Vodacom South Africa said: "MobileTVPlaya is an African first and we're confident of significant uptake amongst our customers who want access to live and on-demand information and entertainment content on their cellphones at any time, any place."
Laurence Alexander, CEO of ROK TV, said: "We're delighted to be working with Vodacom in the deployment of streamed mobile TV across South Africa and we will be looking into adding increased functionality and interaction to the service, and even more relevant content in future, once we have a clear idea of the genres of channels that prove most popular."
