The Linux lobby wants to get a sharpened-up version of its OS inside handsets next year
The LiMo Foundation, a collaborative project dedicated to taking Linux mobile, is currently working on removing the fragmentation and complexity in the technology. It was set up so that only core members can ship commercial products with LiMo middleware.
Jason Whitmire, general manager of mobile solutions at LiMO member Wind River, said: "Historically the market for Linux-based mobile platforms has been highly fragmented, leading to unwarranted complexity and excessive development cycles…(the market needs) tightly integrated tools that lay the foundation for a stable predictable roadmap that handset original equipment manufacturers and operators can depend on."
LiMo members include: Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics, and Vodafone Group. It announced on Monday that five new core members and seven associate members had joined its organisation.
