PayPal has launched Mobile Checkout in the US, UK and Canada.
The mobile web service gives PayPal customers the chance to pay merely by clicking on a Paypal icon during a mobile internet session (after logging in correctly). It complements a text-message-based payment service that PayPal introduced in April 2006.
The new service should help merchants sell small ticket items such as DVDs, CDs, tickets and books through the Mobile web. Its potential impact on the sales of downloadable mobile content remains to be seen.
“Millions of consumers have chosen PayPal because it offers a safer, easier way to pay online,” said Kevin Dulsky, senior director of PayPal Mobile. “As the mobile commerce market grows as an extension of ecommerce, it will be critical for online merchants to adopt a secure mobile payment platform to reach new consumers and to remain competitive in the market.”
