France-based Webwag has launched the beta version of its mobile 'widgets' application.

Webwag joins the likes of of Nokia Ventures-funded Widsets in taking the widgets concept to mobile phones.

Originally conceived by Apple for its desktop computers, widgets are always on, always connected graphics-based apps that provide a single point of access for multiple types of content - emails, RSS feeds, weather forecast, image sharing, notepad etc.

The theory goes that the constrained form factor mobile phones are perhaps more suited to widget technology than desktop computers as they remove the need for multiple clicks to access and start the above functions individually.

Webwag claims it is the first internet software publisher to offer access to a mobile extension of its web widgets, with Webwag Mobile synchronising with the Webwag.com start page.

It is initially available for Java-enabled devices, with Webwag due to release an SDK for third party widget creation by the end of June.

Webwag CEO Franck Poisson said: "We aim to make the mobile internet experience massively popular, by rendering it simple, fast, nice and cheap. Webwag Mobile helps our web users access their familiar and personal web services already customized on Webwag.com on their mobile device."
