PopCap moves casually into mobile
Tim Green May 29 2007, 2:00pm
Casual gaming specialist PopCap has deepened its commitment to wireless with the release of Chuzzle Mobile, its first internally-developed mobile game, and the appointment of a full-time mobile director.
The Seattle company is a huge presence on the Internet, with 7 million unique visitors a month. Traditionally it has licensed its titles to partners such as Glu and EA. These titles include substantial franchises such as Zuma, AstroPop and Bejewelled – the last of which Popcap claims to have shifted 10 million since 2001.
Chuzzle is another in its production line of maddeningly addictive cute puzzlers. But this time, it’s been ported for mobile internally, and will be distributed by the Popcap team too.
The new face of Popcap on mobile is former Cingular exec Andrew Stein, who was appointed director of mobile business development two weeks ago.
Stein says Popcap will continue to work with partners but will go direct on chosen titles. It may also consider taking a game mobile before it reaches the PC in some cases.
