On2 Technologies has acquired Finland’s mobile video chip maker Hantro Products for $58.5 million in cash.
US-based On2 specialises in video compression and hopes the deal with Hantro will help bring higher-quality video and longer battery life to mobile handsets. Bill Joll, CEO of On2, said: “This technology allows us to go to the consumer electronics companies, embedded devices, and the handset guys," said Eric Ameres, On2's chief technology officer.
Hantro’s technology has been installed on more than 200 million mobile handsets. On2’s video compression technology is used in Adobe Flash player.
