Mobile LBS pioneer Connectid has changed its name to Zoombak in preparation for its summer product launches.
The Liberty Media-backed company plans to 'front load' the mobile market with its own GPS-enabled handsets and related services, as revealed exclusively by ME in March.
The name change is part of a wider re-branding initiative that Zoombak says will more accurately reflect the kinds of LBS products it will be brining to market.
The New York-based company, run by content giant Mobile Streams, will launch in August. One of its stated aims is to transform the part played by location in mobile entertainment.
Zoombak has created a chip that can improve the LBS capabilities of GSM devices, using Assisted GPS (AGPS). The company will also make single-purpose location-aware devices such as pet collars.
Zoombak CEO Simon Buckingham said: "This name change represents a critical step in our plans toward a consumer products launch later this year. We want to provide products and services that allow consumers to better manage their busy lives and stay connected to their loved ones."
