KDDI Brews up a storm

KDDI subscribers downloaded more than seven million Brew apps in January

The Japanese operator has had particular success with Brew games, for which its catalogue currently exceeds 3,000. Overall, the cumulative number of KDDI Brew downloads is now 160 million since its 2003 launch.

Tsuyoshi Takenouchi, general manager of KDDI’s "au" service planning department, said: "Brew has been a key differentiator for us and has allowed us to stock our
catalogue with larger and increasingly sophisticated mobile games that open
the eyes of the consumer to what they can play on their wireless devices."

Since the launch of Brew in 2003, Qualcomm has enjoyed considerable success in the US and parts of the Far East. In Europe it is currently growing its influence with a new ‘modular’ Brew offering that enables operators to pick and choose the Brew elements they want to adopt. These include a gaming solution, a user interface (uiOne) and more. Takers so far include TIM and O2.
