The History Channel has gone D2C in the UK and will roll out in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia later in 2007.
Arvato Mobile has built and will serve the platform for the site, which offers a range of tiers, including a free service, pay per download and subscription. Features include a ‘This Day in History’ component, programme information, video highlights, quizzes, polls and competitions. On the paid-for service consumers can view short form video and download wallpapers and games. To promote the launch, the subscription service will be available for free for the first six weeks.
The History Channel currently has mobile TV services via various operators in the UK, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Mexico and Turkey. It’s available in 130 countries on conventional TV.
“We are pleased to offer The History Channel content to users via this new mobile service. The platform enables us to offer a new service to our existing audience and bring new viewers to the channel,” said Steve Ronson, executive VP of A&E Television Networks (AETN).
