BREW apps and services have grossed more than $1 billion since the content platform was first launched in November 2001, says Qualcomm.

It’s a significant milestone for Qualcomm, which reflects the enduring strength of its proprietary BREW technology in the face of a strong ‘open’ alternative J2ME (Java). BREW’s heartland is in the US, where it powers Verizon’s very successful Get It Now portal. But the platform is commercially deployed by operators in 31 countries around the world.

And in the last few months, these have included European networks such as O2 UK and Telecom Italia. Both have deployed Qualcomm’s uiOne offering, which improves the way content services are presented on the handset. TIM also launched a variety of new BREW games via the Gaming Signature Solution as well as ‘idle mode’ services and downloadable themes.

Bob Briggs, senior VP and general manager of BREW for Qualcomm Internet Services, said: “The $1 billion earned by BREW publishers and developers is a testament to the innovation they have shown in bringing valuable, relevant wireless services to market.”

Earnings figures were calculated based on payments made by Qualcomm to BREW publishers and developers and on reports from certain BREW operators reflecting what they had directly paid their publishers and developers.
