BSkyB has edged closer to a full launch of mobile broadcast TV using Qualcomm’s MediaFLO solution after completing a second trial.

This technical trial, conducted in Manchester during winter 2006, featured Sky TV content delivered to non-commercial devices from MediaFLO owner Qualcomm. It followed a similar test held in Cambridge last summer.

According to Qualcomm’s official communication, the results proved the superiority of MediaFLO over rival platforms such as DVB-H. Robin Crossley, strategy adviser, technology for BskyB, said: “The trial showed that the MediaFLO System has considerable technical advantages over DVB-H and confirms the financial modelling undertaken to date.”

Peggy Johnson, president of Qualcomm MediaFLO Technologies, added; “Completion of a second trial with BSkyB underscores our technical claims for MediaFLO and clearly demonstrates the robust performance of the system…and highlights that the superiority of the MediaFLO system will translate into real world benefits for organizations wishing to build a mobile TV business.”

Qualcomm will shortly launch its first MediaFLO service with Verizon Wireless and in Japan, both KDDI and Softbank have announced their intent to explore the possibility for deployment.
