Groove Mobile will power an off-portal mobile music store for Universal Music UK.
The portal will give users instant access to full track downloads from the label’s catalogue via SMS short codes. Universal plans to create WAP sites around individual artists including Take That, Razorlight, Scissor Sisters, the Killers, Mika, James Morrison and Keane. The news comes on the back of a great year for the company, which released four of the top five best-selling digital albums in 2006.
Rob Wells, senior VP of digital for Universal Music Group International, said: “Groove Mobile shares our commitment to off-portal innovations that deliver mobile music to larger audiences.
We are enthusiastic about the prospect of bringing our talented artists direct to consumers using SMS short codes.”
Groove Mobile already powers the 3MusicStore and the Orange Music Player in the UK.
