Nareos has licensed a selection of content from the Mobile Data Group to offer via its PeerBox file sharing mobile service.

South Africa-based Mobile Data Group will provide ringtones, videos, games, pictures and entertainment products (quizzes, jokes) to the service. PeerBox users will be able to legally search and download these products either through open P2P file sharing networks such as Gnutella or EDonkey or from Nareos’ online store.  Any copyrighted material will be available as paid mobile downloads only.

“The agreement with Mobile Data Group marks a leap forward in our consumer offering of non-music related mobile content,” said Alexander Lazovsky, CEO of Nareos. “We’re always looking for innovative, colorful and fun content for our PeerBox customers - and Mobile Data Group provide a perfect match.”

File sharing has a tarnished name in online circles, thanks to the widespread use of the technology by consumers to share copyrighted material. This practice has led to court cases against sites like Kazaa by rights owners - especially in the music business.

PeerBox was the first P2P file sharing network on mobile phones. However, while It seeks to emulate the benefits of its online counterparts in terms of search speeds, viral marketing and breadth of catalogue, it also ensures copyrighted material cannot be downloaded without payment. The company is also planning to complement its premium mobile content with user-generated video channels.
