SanDisk increases capacity

SanDisk has tightened its grip on the mobile memory market with the purchase of Israel’s M-systems in a share swap deal.
The merged company will now focus on speeding the development and market penetration of high capacity NAND flash storage, which is capable of delivering 16Gb and over on mobile memory cards.
Eli Harari, Chairman and CEO of SanDisk, said: “This acquisition will…take our shared vision to the next level. The NAND flash data storage business is in its early stages and we believe the market opportunity is largely untapped."
M-systems is one of the foremost providers of memory to the mobile industry, and is closely associated with the growing market for high capacity SIM cards. Its 512Mb MegaSIM product is being trialled by Orange, and M-systems believes a 1Gb SIM will be in use by the end of the year.
