Looks to accelerate the growth of new smartphone and tablet businesses.

NTT Docomo has announced plans to launch a $109 million (10bn yen) venture fund to support mobile startups in furthering their smartphone and tablet-based innovations.

The Japanese operator will primarily focus on its home soil to improve services and technology for local businesses, but will also invest in the Silicon Valley-based 500 Startups II project.

Aspiring companies will have the chance to opt into the incubation programme until March 11th. Those chosen will be given training, guidance, use of office space, and up to $23,000 (2m yen) seed funding.
