Russian search giant snaps up maker of 3D mobile user interface.
Yandex says the deal will enable it to extend its reach into mobile, and that it plans to integrate SPB Shell 3D into its cloud services and technologies.
"Mobile is a vital part of our growth strategy. The acquisition of SPB Software creates new market potential for us and a plethora of possibilities for innovative solutions for our partners", said Yandex's CEO Arkady Volozh.
"SPB Shell 3D is an ideal foundation on which to build up our mobile opportunity."
Russia's SPB has forged a strong reputation with its user interface in recent years. It's available direct to consumer from app stores, but has also been white labelled by some handset manufacturers. For example, it was recently featured in the new range of Huawei phones.
The firm has also become known for its SPB TV streaming TV player, which has more than 10m subscribers worldwide.
Last month SPB announced that SPB Software/SPB Shell 3D would operate independently from MobiWorld Media, the licence owner of SPB TV.
The two companies had shared infrastructure and personnel since MobiWorld Media was incorporated in 2007.
This purchase does not affect SPB TV, which will continue as a separate entity.
