NFC-ready reader shipments hit 2.5 million in 2011

Start of a growth phase that will drive market towards 43.4 million installed units in 2017.

Berg Insight reckons the global installed base of NFC-ready POS terminals will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 49.4 per cent from 3.9 million units in 2011 to the whopping 2017 total.

This represents an increase in the penetration rate at retail from eight per cent in 2011 to 53 per cent in 2017. Of course, this all varies by territory: in the US, for example, the rate will be 86 per cent by 2017, with Europe at 78 per cent and the rest of the world at 38 per cent.

And Berg believes mobile enabled payments will drive the expansion started by NFC enabled plastic cards.

Lars Kurkinen, telecom analyst at Berg Insight, said: “Mobile wallet services will create an unprecedented opportunity for retailers to interact with consumers in real-time while their purchasing decisions are being formed, for instance by delivering personalised offers in real-time while consumers are inside the shop."
