The update was a low key component of the updated “Explore” feature that rolled out to Foursquare’s Android and iPhone applications last week.
In the Android version, NFC support was added to the venue, lists and me pages.
It's branded 'Android Beam', and lets users tap phones to initiate friend requests and share info or tap their phone against an NFC tag or poster to check in.
Any third party developer can add NFC functions through the APIs provided by Google.
Android users need to run Ice Cream Sandwich and own a Galaxy Nexus.

Needless to say, contactless is not available on iOS because none of the devices support it yet.
Holger Luedorf, VP of Mobile and International at Foursquare, told UnteatherTV: “The user experience is great. You just hold your phone against the tap [point]. The check-in screen automatically pops up with the right venue. You’re basically shaving very valuable seconds off the checkin process."
