Rmuours of mass redundancies; founder to become 'advisor'.

Hawkins is the charismatic games guru who helped form EA 30 years ago, then tried to make 3DO a viable alternative to Sega and Nintendo.

He founded Digital Chocolate in 2004 when the market was all about stand alone Java games, but he always had a vision of a connected social play ethic.

Now, that's where all the action is - but it seems DigiChoc is struggling to match the impact made by Zynga et al.

TechCrunch quotes AppData stats that say Zynga has 247 million MAUs, while Digital Chocolate ranks at number 61 with 6.3 million MAUs.

It reckons the firm has laid off up to 180 people across offices in India, San Mateo, Russia and elsewhere.

Hawkins himself noted in his company blog that he is moving to ad advisory role and that DigitChoc is “narrowing its focus."
