Ron Czerny on plans to replace ringtone revenues with micro-payments from connected play.

PlayPhone is one of the world's longest-established ringtone vendors. The US-based firm has spread its subscription-based model across the world, while winning major deals to power the content offerings of major brands like Wal-Mart and Cartoon Network.

But ringtones are in decline, and those B2B deals have failed to deliver.

PlayPhone is not alone in looking for a new direction. But eyebrows were raised when that direction turned out to be social gaming – even more so when its first contract win turned out to be the huge Wii game Harvest Moon.
