User that tipped the Apple portal past the milestone will receive €10,000 iTunes Gift Card.

In a world where physical stores like HMV are being closed down, Apple's digital iTunes Store is booming and has reached the milestone for 25 billion songs sold.

The 25 billionth downloaded song was downloaded by Phillip Lüpke from Germany, and Apple assure he will receive a €10,000 iTunes Gift Card as thanks.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of internet software and services, said: "We are grateful to our users whose passion for music over the past ten years has made iTunes the number one music retailer in the world.

"Averaging over 15,000 songs downloaded per minute, the iTunes Store connects music fans with their favourite artists, including global sensations like Adele and Coldplay and new artists like The Lumineers, on a scale we never imagined possible."

iTunes boasts more than 26m songs and is available in 119 countries on devices including iPhone, iPad, iPod, Mac, and PC.
