2bn app downloads were made in December alone.

Apple's App Store has hit 40 billion downloads, less than a year after reaching 25bn downloads back in March. The announcement follows Flurry's study that showed 1.76bn Android and iOS apps were downloaded in the last week of 2012.

Apple certainly had a bumper December as the App Store reached 2bn downloads during the month alone, while it generated almost 20bn downloads throughout the year, and now boasts over half a billion active App Store accounts.

Meanwhile, developers have made more than 775,000 apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, and have collectively been paid more than $7bn dollars by Apple.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of internet software and services, said: "It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community.

"Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."
