iPad app lets you create and print 3D characters.
Autodesk’s 123D Creature app for iPad allows users to create and 3D print all manner of characters and creatures.
Inspired by technology used by professional designers and 3D artists, the new app is aimed at allowing anyone to easily create and print impressive 3D characters.
“Now, for the first time, 123D Creature makes it easy for anyone to create a sophisticated creature on an iPad, and then have a 3D print delivered to their doorstep with a few swipes of their finger,” said Samir Hanna, vice president of Consumer Products at Autodesk. “With our 123D family of apps, we strive to put powerful 3D technology into the hands of anyone who wants to be creative, and we look forward to seeing the original creatures people will create and share with the community.”
The process of making a 3D character begins with a simple skeleton creator, whereby users lay out the basic anatomy of their creature in clay. Multi-touch gestures then allow the users to sculpt their creature by utilising a range of tools, which will be familiar to users of the 123D Sculpt app.
Following the sculpting and shaping process, a creature can then be airbrushed and/or embellished with decals and textures imported from the user’s iPad photo library.
From this point, users can take their creature into the render room, where they can customise lighting and shadows, apply filters, and import background photos to create images to share with friends.
For those who would like a real-life sculpture of their creation, a 3D print of their creature can be ordered, with a few steps, that will be mailed to them from Sculpteo’s 3D printing services embedded within the app.
Artists can also enhance their characters at a professional level in other Autodesk 3D visual effects and animation software, including Autodesk Maya and Autodesk 3ds Max.
The Autodesk 123D Creature App is only available from the App Store on iPad or at http://appstore.com/AutodeskInc/123DCreature.
The retail price of app will be priced at US $7.99, but at launch the app will be offered at a special price of $1.99 for a limited time.
