Mythical mobile to arrive in 'coming months'.

Talk of an Amazon Kindle smartphone blew into town around 18 months ago, but despite belief that the phone would arrive in Q4 2012, no such device has ever been revealed.

Wall Street Journal reports otherwise, however, claiming the online retailer is indeed working on a high end smartphone with a glasses-free 3D display.

Use of retina-tracking tech would create a hologram-like illusion to make it seem as though content is floating above the screen, thus appearing 3D from all angles. Furthermore, the retina feature may also enable eye-based scrolling, a function introduced on the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Amazon has already embraced the tablet market through the Kindle Fire and would be well placed to produce a smartphone, given that it has its own distribution channel and the burgeoning Appstore, which continually receives enhancements to support developers and consumers.

The company is thought to unveil the handset in the coming months.
