Virtual app currency is doubling its user base every month.

GetJar's Android currency was designed to give developers an entirely virtual alternative to other payment methods.

Consumers can't buy the coins. Instead, they earn them by visiting sites or downloading demo apps and so on.

Through an instant one-click transaction, these gold coins can then be spent on any participating apps, bypassing the need for complex registration systems. And because it's virtual, most regulatory barriers are bypassed.

But the programme is ad-supported so there is a genuine pay out for accredited developers.

GetJar says it increases revenue for developers by two-to-three times compared to Google Check-out only in-app billing.

The concept was introduced at the end of February and has been used on apps like Fruit Ninja by Halfbrick Studios, Solo by Coding Caveman and GoSMS by Go Development.

“Enabling our users to pay for premium services with GetJar Gold Virtual Currency Program has added over a million dollars a year in revenues to our business,” said Robin Chao, VP Marketing at Go Dev Team.

“We have been very impressed with the results thus far and are working closely with the GetJar team on optimising our monetization to further double or even triple the revenue in the next few months.”

GetJar believes GetJar Gold will reach 40m users within a month.
