Travellers increasingly dependent on broadband to keep connected to mobiles.

Thomas cook recently found that a third of kids take smart devices abroad with them, while 28 per cent of customers expect wi-fi at destinations. Now, Hotels.com finds that 34 per cent of its users rank free wi-fi as the number one factor when choosing a hotel for leisure, spiking to 56 per cent for business travellers.

Meanwhile, 66 per cent said they wish free wi-fi would become standard across the board, with access to the web more popular than complimentary parking and breakfast. Interestingly, there's a line that won't be crossed as  just 11 per cent of global travellers would pay for broadband.

Kate Hopcraft of Hotels.com, said: "With an increase in airlines and airports offering free wi-fi, tech-savvy travellers expect the experience to continue upon arrival at their hotel.

"They are using their tablets, smart phones and laptops to plan activities, stay connected to family and even order a delivery meal straight to their hotel room, so it's no surprise they require free and fast wi-fi."

The survey was conducted with more than 8,600 people from 28 countries.
