eMarketer claims Americans are set to spend $120 billion making travel arrangements online in 2012, an 11 per cent increase on last year.
However, the mobile market is growing faster, as 36.7 million users are set to book travel via mobile device by 2016, doubling 16 million this year, which is up from 12 million in 2011.
Additionally, 74.3 million are expected to research travel plans via mobile, up from 37.8 million this year.
To put this into context, 120 million Americans are set to research travel online this year, while 98.3 million are set to book travel on the platform.
This further shows demonstration of the impact mobile has had on travel, following our reports that over two-thirds of Brits use smartphones for travel activities, while 91 per cent of iPad owners do the same.
