UK Government to introduce new porn protection bill

Aimed to prevent youths from gaining underage access.

The UK government has launched a new bill to stop underage youths from accessing hardcore content online.

The ruling will ensure ISPs and mobile operators prevent access to porn at the entry level if users aren't 18, while those that are will need to request the block is removed via an opt-in option.

Baroness Howe of Idlicote presented the bill and said it will allow parents to protect their children, while claiming most content has escaped regulation. This falls in line with our report that Ofcom summoned BlackBerry to a hearing regarding porn filters.

Claire Perry MP supported Howe's proposal, saying: "The Howe Bill addresses very effectively one of the greatest challenges for UK parents today, protecting children online. It is a timely and important piece of legislation that I hope will have a big impact."

Results found that a number of porn sites don't have age verification systems in place, while YouGov found two-thirds of children have accessed adult material on their mobile devices.
