Chat specialist CamContacts explains the many ways in which mobile scores over the PC.
The phrase '2011 is the year of mobile' was used a great deal last year. It was a cliche, but it certainly applied to us.
We launched our first mobile platform in 2003, and saw steady growth throughout the decade. But billing for 2011 was up 70 per cent on 2010 – and the monthly figures remained high right from the start of year.
As usage grew, it became obvious that the mobile channel has the potential to outstrip what was achieved on PC.
The average session spend-per-time-spent for mobile devices in general is around seven per cent more than for desktop-based users. Impressive given how new the channel is to CamContacts.
Some titles overperform. The average session time versus spend on StripMeister Challenge (part of our StripHiLo product on mobile) is ten per cent higher on mobile than on traditional desktop.
Unsurprisingly, the total amount of hours spent for video chat on the PC or laptop is large when compared to mobile. However, the ratio of hours spent in video chat on mobile devices to the amount billed is pretty impressive.
An average video chat session on mobile for 2011 is half the amount on the desktop. But while the PC rates will remain static this year, we reckon mobile is still growing.
Meanwhile there is 50 per cent more spending power on mobile than web. This proves users are not afraid to use their phones for video chat, and are even willing to pay for the personal privilege.
One interesting trend we’re seeing at CamContacts is what we call the “show off” trend. Mobile users are frequently requesting video chat with the most beautiful, exotic girls on our sites. Naturally, the guys want to show off to their colleagues and friends.
The result is not only bragging rights for them, but a higher price per minute being selected to talk to these beautiful women.
These sessions generally take place at the office during breaks and lunch hour. And because users know the PC is being monitored, they take advantage of their smartphone to chat.
One final mobile factor worth mentioning concerns trust. Viewers who access CamContacts via mobile see fewer barriers to using their credit card than desktop users do.
Perhaps it's the personal nature of the device. Either way, the use of coupons, Bluetooth and NFC tech is helping create more trust with regard to mobile use.
Looking to the future, we see some interesting trends forming.
For example, the iPad is becoming the device of choice for the gay population using our video chat. This is corroborated by other reports elsewhere that the iPad is the number one device used for this sector – echoing the real power of the pink pound and dollar.
Overall, we’ll be brave and predict that around 2015, mobile spend and usage will almost match, if not supersede desktop and laptop usage on CamContacts.
And we will be ready for it! The question is will you be?
