Fake app harvested user details and set up premium messages.
Six Japanese men have been arrested by Tokyo police, according to the Daily Yomiuri, following the roll out of an Android porn app-based scandal, which raked in ¥21 million.
The con artists promoted the free app on a faux adult site, with the false promise that it would provide access to rich video content. But in truth, the app was stealing email addresses, phone numbers, and other personal details for storage on an overseas server.
Once the app was opened, the screen was displayed every five minutes, saying: "Please pay the fees as soon as possible. You need to confirm the unpaid amount. It totals 99,800 yen."
The app was launched on December 30th, and received more than 9,000 downloads, with 211 paying out for non-existent premium material.
Three of the incarcerated bunch were working as IT execs, with one generating the idea, another handling the porn site, while the third took care of the contamination.
