Facebook was battered by a hack last year, which smeared a number of pornographic and aggressive images across users' newsfeeds.

It's now been targeted again (though not directly) as the Subway Facebook page has been riddled with anime characters stuffing their orifices with subs, says Daily Dot, which have been used to replace the male members', well, members.

Facebook is considered an integral part of a brand's marketing strategy, which differs for each company.

For example, some brands use an interactive method that allows fans to post on their wall and tag them in photos (clearly Subway's strategy), while others only enable fans to interact with content that the brand itself has submitted.

The content made its way over to social sharing site Reddit, where one user said: "This is what happens when a large public entity lets everyone tag them in photos. They should know better."

A Subway spokesperson, said: "We are aware of the excessive spam on our Facebook wall and have removed all content that is in direct violation of our House Rules. We are in contact with Facebook to investigate the matter further and enact a swift resolution."
